Friday Frugalista: Kroger Shopping Tips

0

This week’s spotlight is on savvy grocery shopping at Kroger. Kroger is quite possibly the most popular grocery store in the Atlanta area, and for good reason… They have good prices, lots of variety, and great coupon policies.  Just a few pointers… Kroger no longer doubles manufacturer coupons.  Their Buy One Get One sale items will ring up half price each (so you can just buy one if needed), and they will allow you to stack a store coupon on top of a manufacturer coupon to maximize savings.  Don’t forget to read up on my recent post about understanding grocery sales before you head to the store!

Whether you’re a Kroger newbie or even a long time loyal customer, there are a few things to keep in mind to get the best deals while shopping there.

  1.  Kroger Plus Card: This is your first step towards saving some serious money. Even if you’ve had one for years, it’s very important to update your address information on their website. They send coupon packets about once a week, and often times they are tailored specifically towards things you buy. These coupons are GOOD, and by good I mean like $5 off $15 for the produce department. I also get coupons for FREE Oreos every now and then. You really don’t want to miss out on these bad boys.Kroger Plus Card collage
  2. Ecoupons: You can gain extra savings by using ecoupons at Kroger.

These can be loaded straight onto your Plus Card from Kroger’s website (or mobile app), as well as this one. There is one tricky thing about ecoupons at Kroger though.  They cannot be used in conjunction with paper coupons. Ecoupons are automatically applied to your purchase if you have loaded them on your card.  You will not be allowed to use a higher value paper coupon instead. If you never use paper coupons of any kind, then go ahead and load up all the ecoupons you want. It’s better to wait on loading the ecoupon if there’s a chance you may have a higher value paper coupon.

  3. Mega Events: Kroger frequently runs Mega Event sales.  Customers must buy a certain number of participating items and receive a certain dollar amount off their total bill. These are a great way to maximize savings because you may also use coupons on these qualifying items.
  4. Fuel Savings: When you shop at Kroger, you generally earn one fuel point for every $1 you spend. After scanning your Plus Card at a Kroger or Shell gas station, you will save 10 cents a gallon for every 100 points you’ve earned. They typically offer double fuel points on gift card purchases.  Sometimes they run specials to quadruple gift card fuel points!   Kroger is also currently running a great digital coupon offer.  Once loaded, you earn bonus double fuel points on all weekend (Friday through Sunday) purchases through the month of July.
  5. Free Friday Item: Each Friday, head to Kroger’s website to load the coupon onto your Plus Card for the weekly free item. Here’s the best part… you have over two weeks to pick it up at the store! Who doesn’t love FREE?!Kroger Shopping HadleyThere’s clearly a lot to love about Kroger, but just a couple more things… Many of them now feature a Starbucks location inside! They also are big on product samples, which is great for keeping curious kids occupied while shopping.  We love Kroger!
