Frugalista Friday: Produce Prices Comparison

Who is ready for some more produce price information?!

This week, I added research on potatoes, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, oranges, and corn. I found prices for both conventional and organic for each item wherever possible.  Because sale prices vary from week to week, I was looking for the regular (non-sale) price of each item.  Most stores list that information on the shelf label, but wherever the regular price wasn’t listed, I put the sale price in gray on the spreadsheet.  That reminds me to update it with the regular price when it comes off sale.

I took the best value for each regular priced item at the store, so that often meant buying those multiple pound bags of things like potatoes rather than the singletons. The weights in parentheses in each case represent the bag size I used to get that price point.

The highlighted boxes represent the lowest produce prices. Aldi continues to be the lowest price spot for most produce items, but some of the other stores came pretty close on a few items this week.  I am definitely loving Aldi’s prices, but I have found their inventory to be hit or miss.  They were out of strawberries 3 out of four times I’ve been there.  This info at least gives you an easy reference to know what things cost that aren’t on sale, and you can use weekly sale ads to determine the rest.

If you are an organic produce purchaser, Kroger definitely seems to be your best bet.  They have the best selection of any of the stores on organic items, and their prices are often better than the others too.

Are your fave items still not listed? Not to worry, I’ll be continuing to update this each week with more and more items that you mamas requested until we’ve worked our way through most of our highly requested produce, and then we can start a new one for dairy or meat! I’m open to all feedback, so if you have any suggestions for what would make this more helpful for you, feel free to comment or pm me!
